SIR – Terry Tordoff has tasted the excellent field rations that the modern British Army enjoy, including a decent curry, pointing out that it was Napoleon who once stated that an army marches on its stomach.

We learned in history classes at school that at the same time Napoleon could never understand how the Duke of Wellington’s men in the British Army could fight as they did on the food that they ate.
