SIR – It is sadly a sign of our times that we read headlines like ‘Fury at lollipop sacking’ (T&A, May 30).
It appears that Mrs Lund of Cross Hills is being dismissed from her job of keeping children safe after 26 years of loyal service, as part of a cost-cutting exercise.
Lollipop men and ladies were there to see me safely across the road to school when I was a child, and the traffic was nothing like as deadly then as now. Crossing busy roads is a nightmare for adults now, let alone children.
North Yorkshire County Council believe this exercise will save the county £12,000.
I would ask the question, how many little ones lives does 12 grand represent?
