SIR - The report on the voting-down of our motion on travellers ("BNP criticised for tarring' innocent", September 13) failed to do it justice.

The speech I would have made, had a debate been permitted, would have focused on the inadequacies of the solutions offered.

The Tories said they were doing all they were allowed by current legislation - something neither our constituents nor Gerry Sutcliffe MP accepts!

Labour's amendment was more balanced but eventually begged the police to get tougher, limiting the Council's role to the security of sites open to invasion and speeding up the serving of eviction orders, a purely reactive strategy rather than one anticipating and preventing future transgressions.

As for the Liberal Democrats, their amendment portrayed the BNP councillors as picking on travellers. In fact, we were responding to the widespread outrage of my Wyke constituents, particularly the residents of Oakenshaw.

These three parties may feel they have buried the issue for six months but I doubt if the public will feel they have been well served by their elected representatives.
