SIR – How deluded are Councillor Ian Greenwood and the Rt Rev Nick Baines with their recent comments on the benefits caps proposed by the Tories.
The Bishop concludes: “As people with a salary of £26,000 also receive child benefit on top, it’s only right that those who are capped at the same level should receive it too.”
No – a salary has involved work, generally enduring early/late starts, long hours, travelling in bad weather conditions etc, and is taxed. Benefits are given tax-free, so to apply any equality value is laughable to say the least.
As for Coun Greenwood’s protestations that these caps are “an attack on the poor”; well learn how to budget properly with other people’s money and find the savings.
Maybe the £500,000 we pay union officials would be a good start? Or, maybe you could dip into some of the £35 million of taxes that go into local authority employer pension contributions each year?
Why do those not in the public sector have to subsidise those that are? It’s bad enough we have to pay their inflated wages to employ them to make our lives a lot harder – but support them after? No thanks.
