SIR - Too many dog owners automatically assume they are in charge of their dogs simply because humans are deemed superior to animals.
No matter what breed, size or temperament the dog, and no matter how much we think we've humanised or domesticated it, we should never lose sight of the fact that all dogs are pack animals and survive instinctively as such.
A pack animal needs to be part of a pack - you and your family - in order for it to function normally, and if not properly trained and disciplined (something a dog happily accepts) its instinct will endeavour it to dominate you and your family members.
A so-called "guard dog" will certainly be a danger to intruders, if they show up - but what about the owner's children who can show up at any time?
In order to prevent intruders it would be more effective and ultimately safer to purchase a good burglar alarm system; more expensive than a guard dog at the onset but a burglar alarm does not require a hefty food bill - and won't attack your children.
