SIR – It is reported in the T&A (January 25) that the Bradford City Hall bill for pensions last year was a massive £35m. It went on to say that this included 54 councillors, the seventh largest number in the country.
I had always understood that councillors were not employees of the Council, hence why they only receive expenses for their work.
As such, one really has to wonder why there is the ability for them to be enrolled in the Council’s pension scheme at all.
Decisions at Council level appear to be controlled by the executive, with our 90 councillors (executive members apart) having little effective say.
That so many of these ‘non-employees’ are benefiting from this pension scheme really does make one wonder about the apparent continued largesse within the public sector.
