SIR – Like many people, I smoked for many years until I finally stopped over four years ago.

I can sympathise with those who feel the need for a cigarette in times of stress – particularly when a loved one is ill in hospital.

Initially, I thought that smoking shelters were going to be provided at the hospitals, but patients and visitors continue to congregate round the main entrances.

In the normal way of things, I would live and let live, but I am currently undergoing chemotherapy, which makes one feel nauseous to start with.

It really is a nightmare trying to hold your breath while struggling through a crowd of smokers usually blocking the entrance. If people must smoke outside the main entrance, can I make a plea that they leave the steps and the entrance clear, so that those of us who may be feeling ill can get through as quickly as possible?
