SIR – Re “Policies are failing”, (Letters, January 23). Denholme’s R Hobson says PM Cameron is “bringing the lads home from Afghanistan for a few days so that they have to pay income tax”.

If so, the PM should be condemned – the cost of military transport per soldier from Afghanistan and back again must be £2,000 and more. What a waste of money to get a few thousand pounds for the Exchequer.

I’m surprised military top brass accept this when they are told to make savings – why should they spend money unnecessarily to “benefit” another branch of Government? I wouldn’t!

As for “Liberal turncoat”, whoever R Hobson is referring to has stood up for Lib-Dem principles and policies, many of which – like the pupil premium, and decent pension increases – are being implemented.

Labour, on the other hand, ran away from the mess that they had presided over, clamping up on coalition talks with the Liberal Democrats after initial promising talks.

Just who does R Hobson want to see running the country?
