SIR – The T&A, on January 21, asks the question ‘are you a donor and what inspired you to give blood?’ The answer to that is probably just a whim.

I had donated blood previously over the years in the workplace when mobile units visited, so why not?

Some people have misconceptions about donating, and underneath it all is fear.

There is nothing to be afraid of – it is quite painless and the whole visit takes about 20 minutes. By giving blood you could be saving the lives of children who would otherwise have no chance of life.

The most surprising thing is that the life you save could be your own.

The other year I went to donate, but after my blood was tested for iron deficiency it failed. After visits to the GP and the BRI, a tumour was found in the colon, which was causing the problem. This was removed in time to prevent long-term problems developing.

Each time you give blood it is stringently tested and should any abnormalities show up, you would be informed at an early date.
