SIR – Watching coverage on the Parliament channel yesterday and today, the debate was spoilt by the shouting by both parties. From what I could gather, we are all living longer, which is good news for all. But all this has to be paid for, whether in the private or public sector.

To hear union leaders talk on television reminded me of Derek Robinson who helped to kill off the car industry. Arthur Scargill ranting and shouting, Derek Hatton at Liverpool.

To say that the lowest-paid public sector worker will only have £5,500 a year pension is something self-employed and private sector workers would like.

The last Government did not do the public sector any favours by over-staffing and creating non-jobs.

Sooner or later this dispute will be settled, and we can all look forward to a long and happy retirement.
