SIR – The news that poisons have been found on the Buck Lane site (T&A, November 28) must be a concern for any resident of Baildon.

More worrying is the Council’s approach to remediation published in their phase II report. The source of the pollution will not be tackled; instead the contaminated parts of the site will simply be covered by hard standing. Out of site, out of mind?

The report also proposes that the Council issues protective equipment to the construction workers. Nothing is said about the protection of neighbouring residents or the motorists on Otley Road. Surely we should be a concern too?

The Council also say they are determined to develop Buck Lane. Why? It does not make financial sense. So far there are no businesses willing to commit to the site. There is direct competition from the new Eccleshill high-tech business park and the industrial estate the Council plans for brownfield sites at Esholt.

We don’t need a third business park. We need our green spaces. In Baildon, with the Council preparing to squeeze an extra 550 houses into every available corner, breathing space is at a premium.
