SIR – The autumn statement by George Osborne admitted complete failure of this Government’s economic policy. Their promise to electors was to reduce public borrowing, to wipe out the deficit in five years.

But they now have to borrow £150 billion more than planned. This was not the fault of Gordon Brown or European crises.

The failure was forecast by economists like Samuel Brittan of the Financial Times and others when Osborne set out his plan in October 2010. He tried to cut too deep and too fast.

Cameron pledged to “cut the budget deficit, not the NHS” before the election. Both promises broken.

Tory policies are aimed to assist the wealthy the most. For example, capping Council Tax helps owners of expensive houses; capping tax on petrol helps car owners, but owners of large cars benefit most. Households with no car gain nil.

Labour recommended cutting VAT and reducing inflation. This would benefit the poor most; so is unacceptable to Tories.

Council grants have been cut far more in the North. Low pay is more common here, so hard-up families will lose more from the freeze on working families’ tax credits.

This was a disaster for our country and the North especially. What are our Tory and Lib Dem MPs doing to earn their corn?
