SIR – Recent T&A readers’ letters reveal quite clearly that the ‘Working Class Tory’ (WCT) is still alive and living in Bradford. I was amused at the recent spate of attempts to denigrate the anti-capitalist occupations and also to blame the current ‘austerity measures’ on the last Labour government.
A few economic facts: The move to true global capitalism began 30 years ago with Thatcher in this country and Reagan in the US. Since that time real standards of living have fallen dramatically for everybody except the top one per cent.
The problems we all now face are as a direct result of the same global capitalism which, if not severely checked, I confidently predict, will cause a global economic meltdown.
Of course, these greedy, capitalists simply could not get away with it without the direct approval of politicians. Now, given that it would not make financial sense for anyone earning less than £250,000 per annum to vote Tory, the question arises, ‘how have we managed to get a Tory government?’ Enter the WCT.
