SIR – I am writing on behalf of Allerton Cat Rescue. In recent weeks, largely due to the recession and the lack of liquid funds, we find ourself in dire straits financially.

Because of this, we have had to begin turning cats away when brought to us in need of care.

We are mere weeks from closure, in which case the cats already in our care would have to sadly be put to sleep.

We need donations of either money to help with veterinary bills and provide food and comfort for our felines, or donations of food/blankets and other comforts.

We have many lost and unloved animals in our care waiting for the chance of a loving family. Unfortunately, we’re finding it very difficult to get the word out that people can make a difference by way of either donation or rehoming a cat.

All we ask is £35 for each cat rehomed, which will help towards veterinary bills (which includes spaying/neutering before rehoming), comfort and food.

I feel that this is a very small price to pay when one considers the frivolous things we spend our money on during the holiday season. The sum of £35 could buy a few DVDs, a shirt or over-indulgence in seasonal food. To our cats, it could be the difference between life and death.
