SIR – I read with interest D L Smith’s letter (T&A, November 17) suggesting a replacement to the Bradford Playhouse.
However, your readers will be pleased to note the Playhouse is in no need of replacement; a new company has continued to operate the building under license from the liquidator, and seeks support for the long-term future of the building under a new trading name of the Little Germany Theatre.
In fact, we look forward to reopening the 70 seat Studio Theatre as the Isherwood Studio in late January.
The Little Germany Theatre provides two performance spaces, the main auditorium and the studio at 290 seats and 70 seats respectively. It also contains four other spaces of varying sizes, and we are seeking to return the full building to active use.
The Playhouse has given many aspiring actors, directors, artists, technicians and producers a first taste of theatre and the arts, and the loss of the Playhouse would be the loss of an opportunity for people to gain a first step in the arts.
The Playhouse may be “down” but is far from being “out”, and I would urge all those with an interest in the arts to join us in working to return it to its former glory.
Rob Walters, Chairman, Be Wonderful Ltd at the Little Germany Theatre
