SIR – The recent loss of Sir Jimmy Savile was sad for his family and friends but Sir Jimmy will never be forgotten.
Not many people will know this. Jimmy worked at a factory in Otley called William Eyres Fabrics as office boy and tea maker long before he hit the limelight. His duties were to keep the place tidy and make cups of tea for the workers who were employed making parachutes.
My mother worked at Eyres, and many years later when Sir Jimmy first appeared on TV she burst out laughing and proclaimed: “That’s Jimmy who used to make our cups of tea at Eyres”.
But history has proved that Jimmy did quite well for himself!
