SIR – Having read the consultation document concerning the direct election of mayors, I would concur with our elected leaders on the Council that this is completely inappropriate and could be a disaster for Bradford.
The consultation states that powers would be transferred to the mayor to drive the economic growth of the city by having the power to decentralise services and powers to him/herself.
Clearly this is undemocratic and could open the door to corruption at the highest level. Where are the checks and balances to ensure the scrutiny of any projects, contracts or financial deals?
Bradford is a diverse community where different areas have different needs and aspirations. That is why we have local councillors. An elected mayor could not fulfil that role.
We do not want a divided city.
