SIR – Mrs Galilee (Letters, November 3) is right about Yeadon and the involvement of Air Vice-Marshal Geoffrey Ambler. However, the real story begins during the First World War when Yeadon was part of the air defences put together for West Yorkshire in response to threats from Zeppelins.
Interestingly, the most remote airstrip in the defences (most were east of Leeds) was at Manywells Brow – I’ve always suspected that this may have had something to do with the Ambler family since they lived at Wilsden, although Geoffrey was too young to fight in that war.
