SIR – Re ‘It is vital to invest in future of country’ (Letters, November 3). I agree with many points that Miss Petrie makes in the importance of helping young adults with employment.
I would certainly, for example, rather see investment in this area as opposed to seeing the country engaged in countless conflicts, though I have the upmost respect for our servicemen and women. I do have to take issue however with Miss Petrie’s impression that the recession and the lack of work experience mean that many young people are left to sit at home and do nothing.
When I was 18 (I’m 42 now), there were three million people unemployed, and likewise no jobs.
I arranged some voluntary work at Bradford Royal Infirmary, which has lead to a 23-year career in nursing, to date.
I would recommend anyone to do likewise in their chosen profession. Showing initiative, willingness and enthusiasm is likely to get you much further than sitting on a sofa.
