SIR – Yet again, Bradford has pinned all its regeneration hopes on Westfield. Not content with the original £20-£30 million of public investment in the site, part of the £17 million regeneration package is being channeled towards it.
At a time when public spending is being slashed and thousands of people are being made redundant in Bradford, this is the economics of the madhouse. Now is the time for some real leadership.
As confirmed by Freedom of Information answers, the Council has the powers to call the lease in if progress is not being made and to show Westfield the door.
The plans for a shopping centre should be radically revised downwards and any Government regeneration funding redirected to preserve jobs in the sort of community initiatives that are being slashed under present policies.
