SIR – I stopped by the ‘Occupy’ camp in Centenary Square to see what it was all about. Their slogan is ‘We are the 99 per cent’. This refers to the 99 per cent of the population who are doing badly out of the economic recession, as against the one per cent who are actually making money out of it.
Many of the people who stopped by to chat and offer support were recently unemployed, or homeless, or struggling with debt, or suffering public service cuts. This is in contrast with the FTSE 100 directors of British companies who awarded themselves a 49 per cent pay rise last week, on top of already grossly-inflated salaries!
It was also revealed last week that Goldman Sachs were let off a £10 million tax bill recently by cutting a secret deal with the head of HM Revenue and Customs, as Vodafone had done earlier. Imagine what that could have paid for here in Bradford?
I would urge everyone to stop by and exchange a few words with the protesters. I found the conversations that were happening really invigorating.
