SIR – Re your recent article of October 20: “Hub for the elderly to open next year” – a statement by the Bradford and District Senior Power to open an interim centre for the elderly.
I am impressed at their enthusiasm, but wonder if they are aware of the monumental task they have undertaken? To establish a non-profit-making concern in the most expensive part of the city, when many businesses move out because of high costs, is staggering. Have they thought about accessability? Winter months attendances?
To offer services like chiropody etc when local health centres offer similar services for free does not sound feasible. As for health issues, an NHS organisation supported by the Lottery takes these services to community groups.
As an organisation experienced over many years seeking funds, we know the difficulties; funding pots are shrinking and to obtain massive amounts they would have to show income being generated by themselves to show that funds are an addition, not a sole support.
Nevertheless, we wish them well and they may even hit the jackpot.
My advice, for what it is worth – you would initially be better off beginning in a community where you have local clients, cheaper accomodation and more chance of initial sucess.
