SIR – I have recently returned from holiday and I have been catching up on T&As received while away. I note the article on October 15 regarding the closure of Bradford Central Library.
While recognising the good work that Health & Safety has contributed over the years, may I suggest that there are many instances where there is also an over-reaction and where some common sense may prevail?
The article suggests that “the very future of the building is in doubt”. Why is this? Perhaps Elf & Safety should consider how many years the building has been open and how many fires there have been!
Could there be a more realistic risk assessment based upon this fact and other measures? Perhaps I should not have gone on holiday in case there was a problem with the train, the plane or even walking.
I note that the T&A’s Thought for the Day on October 24 was: “The policy of being too cautious is perhaps the greatest risk of all” – a suitable epitaph for some Health & Safety workers who only know how to complete a ‘tick sheet’.
