SIR – As a British charity worker based in Uganda, I’m worried articles in UK newspapers may cause a drop in giving by the public.
I agree that the billions being sent to dictatorial governments needs to end. However there are many small charities which, having workers on the ground and being held accountable by the Charity Commission, can guarantee the money reaches the right place. So I implore the great British public – please don’t stop giving to these charities. And I implore the British Government – just as you encourage small businesses, please also encourage small charities.
I am a director of Child of Hope, a small registered NGO working in Namatala slum (Mbale, Eastern Uganda). Our Ugandan NGO is accountable through our UK charity of the same name.
We have built our own school which currently provides free education, healthcare, food and clothing to 190 children. This is mostly funded through donors in the UK.
