SIR – Max Hey (Letters, October 21) draws our attention to the current problems within the world economy, and in particular to the problems within our own economy.

Few would disagree that there is a crisis, and that politicians seem to have few answers (although we in the UK do not appear to be in such a desperate state as, say, Italy and Greece).

Apparently, though, Max Hey has the answer: “The current economic system shouldn't be tinkered with – it needs replacing.”

I feel it is incumbent on Mr Hey to tell us what system he has in mind to replace the current one; show how he would go about replacing it, and give at least one example of another economic system which has been shown to work better.

Otherwise, Mr Hey is just spitting in the wind.
