SIR - I agree entirely with your Comment (September 13) about the A650 road. A "more drastic solution is required to this problem" and no way should Bradford accept this paltry "bribe" of some £800,000 from the Government to drop their protests.
Mr Steve Barton talks of the "need for more studies", no doubt at enormous expense, when it is really quite obvious what is really needed.
The city should demand the re-instatement of the original plan when first the M606 and then the Aire Valley motorway were being designed. This involved the extension of the M606 down through the side of the city centre, connected to the upgraded Canal Road, the continuation via the Shipley East bypass and picking up the extended and completed Aire Valley motorway at a junction in the Dockfield area.
It is important that all this be done in one go otherwise we will again fall victim to short-term political decisions which would destroy the overall objective.
We must learn from past mistakes.
Because of all the "talk" about the new Bradford Canal and the benefits it can bring, is this not a heaven-sent opportunity to combine the two projects which both basically need to follow the same route and can benefit each other?
