SIR – To clear up some misunderstandings, police officers who break the law are dealt with under the criminal law and also discipline procedures.
People who did read your article (T&A, September 22) will have noted that the officer was issued with a fixed penalty notice, ie a £50 fine, as any member of the public, prior to your article.
Subsequently, discipline procedures commenced and both officers are subject of enquiry to establish all possible breaches of discipline. That is the investigation I mentioned, and as under any discipline procedure the facts are decided at a hearing.
I cannot pre-judge the outcome. I may have a strong opinion on what it may be, given the evidence, but it is not for me to speculate and undermine the process. That is the reason for being non-committal.
In all such incidents any unprofessional, loutish or inappropriate behaviour by any officer will be dealt with and suitable penalty imposed. I will not stand for any such behaviour by officers under my command. They are not above the law.
Let’s get back to focusing on the excellent work by officers in my division, catching criminals, helping vulnerable people and making Airedale and North Bradford a safer place to live.
Det Supt Ian Kennedy, Divisional Commander, Airedale and North Bradford Police
