SIR – The letter from Mr Boyes (T&A, September 21) regarding the 1975 referendum was a little inaccurate.

Yes, Ted Heath was the Prime Minister who took us into the Common Market, but he was not the one who had the referendum.

That was Harold Wilson who did not have the referendum from the goodness of his heart.

Being on a low Parliamentary majority, he had potential trouble from 20 or so left-wing MPs who were against the Common Market as it was.

We would have been better off not in the type of European Union that has evolved, but it has not been constitutionally incorrect not having a referendum on the matter.
