SIR – I was amused at your article on Baroness Warsi, an enthusiastic but naive Tory Minister, declaring in a recent debate among other passionate statements: “Faith schools can promote tolerance” (T&A, September 21).

In the same edition, it was reported that a mini-riot had broken out at a Faith school between students of two different faiths – hardly promoting tolerance and understanding within a Faith school!

Surely this has shaken Baroness Warsi and others’ belief in these schools. Until religious attitudes and intolerance change and stop being pushed at people, this will always be the outcome.

If people were not so pre-occupied with their belief in the hereafter and mixed at a school with the secular subjects neccessary for today’s life and leave the religion to religious venues, students would mix happily.

It is no use asking our children to study opposite religions to promote better understanding. Most have no interest in their own religion, so they will hardly be interested in another’s.

To use a well-worn phrase: “Thank God I am an Atheist.” I don’t have any problems with anyone’s belief.
