SIR – It was stated in the T&A (September 20) that ticket barriers at Bradford Interchange have been a major success in cutting fare-dodging.

What a pity, therefore, that Northern Rail seems unable to do anything about the totally unsatisfactory situation at Bradford Forster Square Station, where the large extent of fare-dodging is continually apparent.

It is surely high time that the concourse there was reconfigured so that ticket barriers can be installed. At the moment there is a token manned barrier on midweek mornings until about 9.30, but then the fare-dodging starts and continues unabated.

You only have to be on a train at, say, Frizinghall, to see passengers boarding, and then walking down the length of the train to avoid the conductor.

These conductors very often have insufficient time to sell tickets, and occasionally, it has to be said, they make too little effort to do so. Passengers often board at stations with open ticket offices, but without buying tickets, in the hope that they can avoid paying.

So, come on Northern Rail, instead of being so smug about your success at the Interchange, please do something about the unacceptable situation at Forster Square. It is long overdue.
