SIR - I have read with interest Tony Blair's cringing attempts to cling on to power. Not for the good of the party, but for his own ego so he can beat Mrs Thatcher's record for length of time in office.

The old saying holds good - power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

How much better politics would be if Britain adopted the American style of politics where a president can only hold office for two terms.

It would finish the constant argument of a minister clinging to office and power for his own sense of glory.
