SIR - The congestion at Saltaire roundabout, pictured, is rightly regarded as a blot on a World Heritage Site. The roundabout also stands at one of Bradford's gateways.

An articulated lorry, bound westward in a continuous stream of traffic, leaves Bradford by the double-carriageway Shipley-Airedale A650. Soon it enters narrow Canal Road/Valley Road, A6037. Traffic lights and an awkward acute bend lead into Otley Road, Shipley.

After a crawl up Otley Road come more traffic lights, the driver struggling at the wheel as he makes another acute turn at the Branch Hotel into Bradford Road, Shipley.

Saltaire roundabout has to be endured before the Bingley by-pass is reached. All this is typical of Bradford's road system.

The Alsop masterplan for Airedale, trumpeted in an issue of "Community Pride" and unveiled at Dalton Mill, Keighley, promised renovation of public buildings in Shipley, Bingley and Keighley, all of which will be matters for public planning and expenditure.

Another feature, the conversion of mills into apartments, depends on private investment. Local architects have the skills to deliver these improvements and developments with no need for Alsop's costly consultations.

The Saltaire roundabout is not even mentioned in reports on the masterplan. Alsop's approach to traffic problems is to ignore them or to propose the closure of busy roads, for example, those around the Bowl.
