SIR – In his letter (T&A, August 12), T Hill, putting right reader Max Hey, missed off his list of incompetents Alistair Darling, and did not do justice to Norman Lamont our saviour from the mess landed us in by Margaret Thatcher, whom surprisingly, allowed her chancellor, John Major, to tie the pound to the DM in the ERM and which caused inflation to soar.

Norman Lamont realised the folly of this, and, as Major’s successor, took the pound out of it on that Golden Wednesday.
