SIR - I would like to draw attention, in the light of the lack of press coverage, to the death of one of novelist. David Gemmell, who died on July 28, aged 57.

He first became famous through his wonderful novel Legend, and went on to become one of the most prolific and famous fantasy novelists in the world.

He wrote more than 20 books in his 22-year career, and will be sadly missed by all those who read them. Despite never becoming as renowned as others, such as David Eddings, there are few who would disagree that he was more talented than many other authors in his genre.

His real strength lay in creating totally believable characters, making the reader care about their triumphs, and sorrows.

I cannot put into this short letter the depth of emotion that many felt about him, but it simply serves to alert those who did not know, the passing of who many believe to be one of the greatest British novelists of recent times.
