SIR - With regard to your article about Myra Shay (T&A, August 29), it was very interesting to read, especially your comment about contaminated land.
In the days when I was a pupil at Hanson Grammar School, Myra Shay was used as the school's sports ground where hockey was played under the tuition of Miss Bower, the sports mistress.
No doubt football was also played by the boys though I can't vouch for that as the two sexes were not integrated - Hanson girls and Hanson boys were schooled in adjoining buildings with a wall separating the two playgrounds.
I can remember there was a changing hut at the top end of the field. No fear of it being burned down in those days.
The spoil heap was also in constant use by children sliding or sledging down according to the season. Soil contamination was unheard of but we were none the worse for our ignorance.
