SIR - As David Rhodes (T&A, September 5) points out, there are several examples of attractive new buildings, like the new police station, in Bradford.

Also, refurbishment of landmark buildings like Eastbrook Hall is welcome.

It's good to see that recently the demolition of good buildings has been curtailed but the idea of deliberately knocking down an iconic building like the Odeon as part of the redevelopment of the city centre is appalling and unnecessary.

If the intention is to link the area between City Hall and the West End as a continuous leisure, entertainment and lifestyle zone, the Odeon towers fit the bill perfectly.

To construct the so-called "winner" in the behind-closed-doors competition would build a physical barrier to the linking of the city centre to the West End and provide out-of-context office space in this leisure zone.

The N&P building was a physical barrier and its replacement with the low-lying and sweeping facade leisure-oriented building has opened up City Square, adding a feeling of light and space.

Restoration of the towers facade and redevelopment behind, like Eastbrook Hall, would be a natural winner, in context with its surroundings and would be ideal for leisure activities.
