SIR – It was good to see Shipley MP Philip Davies (T&A, May 17) backing the proposal by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee that forced marriage should be made a criminal offence. In the view of many, this should have been put in place many years ago.
Indeed, there is an argument that this proposal does not go far enough. Consideration needs to be given to making the same imposition on arranged marriages, a practice that should surely have no place in a civilised society, especially with all the dangers that it entails, as we have seen on many occasions.
