SIR – Re your article ‘Protesters battle to save B&B site trees’ (T&A, May 18).
These lovely trees are important, but Sainsbury’s plan is very wrong for Bingley in many other ways. It would just be a new eyesore, no better than the current building.
Its sheer size would harm local shops by crushing competition, as Asda is doing in Shipley, and its absurd traffic scheme (forcing cars/juggernauts right around the site) means the time, trauma and money spent on the Bingley Relief Road will have been wasted.
Those are just a few of the reasons.
People in Bingley can currently enjoy life walking along Myrtle Grove/Place on Millenium Way, or to the swimming pool and gym, marketplace, shops, theatre, pubs etc, as well as Myrtle Park, and listening to music at the listed bandstand or even just the park’s tranquil peace, all of which would be ruined by the planned oversized store.
The sum of £24 million is being spent on Bradford’s City Park to give it the beauty of trees and naturalistic features. Bingley has such beauty already – but Bradford Council bigwigs and councillors seem set on letting these valuable assets of ours be destroyed under Sainsbury’s plans. Utter madness!
The online petition I started to “Save the Trees” can be found at petitiononline.com/ bbtrees.
