SIR – Unlike many events, Haworth’s 1940s event is run for commercial gain. There are no charitable intentions, its sole purpose is to attract as many people as possible and relieve them of their cash.
All commercial ventures risk not covering costs and running at a loss. The reason for this year’s failure has little to do with attendances, as numbers this year were up.
It is a result of last year’s dreadful shambles, which brought traffic to a halt from Haworth to Keighley, causing misery to a large number of residents. As a direct result of this, meetings were held between councillors, police and traders; resulting in a raft of expensive conditions being imposed on future events.
With regard to ‘rogue traders’, there were no more little stalls than usual, and I don’t see how the odd burger or plant stall would adversely affect general trade.
The majority of traders don’t support the organisers and many residents find such events a nightmare.
I would be sorry to see the 1940s weekend dropped. It is not a ‘victim of its own success’, nor of rogue traders. It is a victim of greed and poor management.
