SIR – Graham Hoyle says we should have some sympathy for the hundreds of Lib Dem councillors who lost their seats at the recent elections (Letters, May 10). Speak for yourself. More’s the pity it wasn’t a General Election then we might have got rid of their cack-handed leader whose broken promises led to their downfall.
Nick Clegg has done irreparable damage to his party in a matter of months and is now not only the butt of comedians’ jokes, but anathema to many of his long-standing associates.
In an attempt to placate disgruntled supporters, the Deputy Prime Minister dismissed predictions that his party faces being marginalised as a result of its participation in the Coalition Government, and Liberal Democrats will remain a “formidable political force in the future” (T&A, May 11).
Pie in the sky. Methinks he and his followers have crossed the Rubicon.
