SIR – Re the report ‘Protesters battle to save B&B site trees’ (T&A, May 18). These trees are a vital feature of Bingley town centre but so is the whole site on which they stand which, for more than 30 years, the out-of-scale, out-of-character, B&B fortress has overshadowed.
The Council for Architecture and Building Environment has commended Sainsbury’s, the new site owner, for “store designs (that) avoid dominating the street scene”, in other parts of the country. Sainsbury’s have missed the opportunity to do something equally commendable in Bingley. Instead, in their present application, they have chosen to dump a giant lunchbox in the town centre, an insensitive construction kit of a building that bears no relationship to its surroundings. T&A readers can see for themselves on the Planning Department website, reference number 11/00940/MAF.
The trees are lovely and must remain. The design for the building must be rejected. Sainsbury’s can do better and Bingley deserves better.
