SIR – I am sure your readers will have noticed the orchestrated mantra from the Coalition regarding their economic policies. They say that they came together in the national interest to clear up the mess left by the previous Labour Government.

The mess was actually a worldwide banking crisis affecting all the major economies.

The deficit run up by Labour was caused by trying to keep the economy from collapsing into depression.

Is Labour to be blamed for a financial crisis that hit America, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and all other developed economies? The banking fraternity is to blame, not a political party.

Even so, the deficit as a percentage of GDP was higher in 200 out of the last 250 years; so what is all this talk of crisis about? The cuts to social services in mainly northern towns and cities are heartbreaking.

Why should the poor and sick pay for the mendacity of the financial sector?

I would believe David Cameron more if his party were not funded mainly by the hedge funds and merchant banks who caused the problem in the first place.
