SIR – I have never approved of military re-enactments because I believe that they trivialise the bravery of those who wore (and wear) the Queen’s uniform, knowing that one day sooner or later they could be ordered to pick up their rifles and march towards real machine guns.

Even worse is the use of real medals by imitation soldiers as was illustrated by the photograph which accompanied your report (T&A, May 7) about a new recruit to the Haworth Home Guard.

This shows him with a tunic bearing the ribbons of the three campaign medals awarded to those who fought in the First World War, and they were not awarded lightly.
