SIR – I am delighted that the Royal British Legion’s Honour The Covenant campaign started four years ago has resulted in the Government moving to write into law for the first time the Military Covenant between the Armed Forces and the British people.
Bradford Council has supported the Honour The Covenant campaign since December 2007 when the motion I proposed at full Council was approved by all councillors. The Honour The Covenant campaign called on Government to honour its life-long duty of care to those in the Armed Forces, making a unique commitment to their country.
Practical steps such as higher council tax relief for personnel serving overseas and high-quality medical care are what is required to happen next.
Councillor Howard Middleton, Bolton & Undercliffe (Lib Dem), Harrogate Terrace, Bradford
