SIR – After reading the article (T&A, May 10) about apprenticeships, it got me thinking about why our society is in such a mess and failing.

For decades now we have been hearing pathetic bleatings from governments and businesses, eg, we don’t have enough doctors, we don’t have enough nurses, we don’t have enough plumbers, etc.

What is the Government answer to self-made problems? To flood the country with immigrants and to ignore the long-term problems.

Doctors, nurses, plumbers are not born thus, they are trained.

For hundreds of years, skills have been passed down in this country from generation to generation. Our Government must make training of the young in skills for the future a major priority.
