SIR – Your report of the fire which destroyed the business at Cliffe Fisheries, Baildon, did not highlight the real significance of this event.
Known locally as “Frank’s”, although usually preceded by some other adjective, this was one of Baildon’s hidden gems, a secret kept from outsiders. It was the last surviving authentic ‘chippie’, serving only half-a-dozen items, cooked in best beef-dripping and swaddled in the wrapping of choice, copies of the T&A.
When Frank was frying, the eclectic accompaniment of high-volume music, usually light classical, was both entertaining and educational. Add the topical collection of wise saying, quotes from the famous and the latest odds of sporting fixtures, all felt-tipped onto fish wrapping-paper and taped to the wall, and any time spent in the inevitable queue passed quickly and with a smile.
If it turns out that Frank Dobson is unable to resurrect his business, it will not only be a sad day for his family but also for the regulars of Baildon who have enjoyed this unique blend of tradition, value and service for so long.
It’s also sad that we often only appreciate something when it is snatched away. Good Luck, Frank and Carmen, you deserve it.
Graham Hoyle, Kirkbourne Grove, Baildon
