SIR – In response to David Rhodes’s letter ‘Profits are greedy’ (T&A, May 10), it would seem that Mr Rhodes had little knowledge of running a business.
I also charge £1.10 for a regular size cup of tea in my coffee shop, and that is a fair price in today’s market. I need to charge that price to help cover my many overheads which include rent, rates, electric, water, phone bill, insurance, staff costs, breakdowns – and that is before I can take a wage!
There is a healthy profit to be made on a cup of tea, as there is on most items, and thankfully my many customers, even in hard times, are happy to pay the prices, enjoy a pleasant ambience, meet friends for a chat and engage with fellow customers.
It is a good job not everybody thinks like Mr Rhodes, otherwise businesses like mine would cease to exist.
