SIR – I agree with Brian Holmans, Mrs Oldcorn, and R Williams (Letters, May 5 and 6) – people using their own cars or business should receive a mileage allowance, but I feel 40p per mile is sufficient.

As chairman of the Shipley Branch of Arthritis Care, I receive this, which is agreed by the charity, and I presume is the norm for other charities.

I should remind Mrs Oldcorn that people who have a company car pay tax at a rate imposed by HMRC for benefits in kind.
