SIR – I was very pleased to find that my friend David Glass was given the accolade Picture Of The Week (T&A, May 7) for his fine picture of the Denholme moorland fire.
The picture shows graphically the urgency of the situation with the smoke billowing skywards, and most amazingly the helicopter carrying the water bucket just about to go out of shot.
I spoke to David later and he commented that he used a 200 to 500mm f6.9 zoom lens from the top of Carr Lane, and that he was so far away that the helicopter hardly registered on his viewfinder.
David has a number of fine pictures on a photo gallery on my website bradfordeye. co.uk, but I think even he’ll agree that luck was with him that day as to the inclusion of the helicopter. I think any photo journalist would have been happy to have captured such a good local news image.
What’s even more astonishing is that David is an amateur photographer. Surely this is encouraging to other amateurs in and around the City of Film. Well done, David!
