SIR – What’s behind the Lib Dem’s northern meltdown?

Labour set their face against an awkward coalition with problematical maths. Lib Dems had to demonstrate seriousness about Government – allow a minority Tory administration and they would have called fresh elections as soon as they could secure most seats on 30 per cent of the vote.

The Tories agreed to two-thirds of our manifesto, which is now being effected (Cameron might prefer us to his own right-wing!).

Thanks to Labour, we still borrow £400m extra every day and pay £120m a day in interest. They planned cuts on a not dissimilar scale, so why are they in denial?

In Government, Lib-Dems have:- l Re-linked pensions to earnings, (abolished by Thatcher and not reintroduced by Labour in 13 years).

l Established a ‘pupil premium’ to help disadvantaged children. Not a Labour policy.

l Raised income tax thresholds to take one million low-paid out of tax, with further raises to come. Labour raised tax on the poorest by abolishing the 10p rate.

l We’ve got fixed five-year parliaments preventing elections being called when it suits. Labour did nothing in 13 years.

l Labour cut capital gains tax, benefitting the rich. We’ve raised it.

Why do Labour hate us?
